Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot broken defaults

Ubuntu Desktop 11.10 has got some broken default settings in my opinion. The defaults are wrong for desktop use, that is. Others seems to agree with me and already found solutions to some problems.

Autoplay

Default settings is to ask to automaticly play content on removable media. Hey, do you really want to invite viruses and trojans?
Turn it off at Dash home -> More Apps -> Installed (more) -> Removable media also available by typing "Removable" in the search box in Dash home.

the Ayatana Scrollbar

To disable it use the Synaptic Package Manager to search for and uninstall these packages: overlay-scrollbar, liboverlay-scrollbar-0.2.0, and liboverlay-scrollbar3-0.2.0. See linuxbsdos.

Global menu bar

Use synaptic to uninstall the package "indicator-appmenu" to get back the menu bar in the application window. Also change the setting for metacity:
gconf-editor /apps/metacity, select general and make sure show_maximized_titlebars is checked.
See blog.

Guest access

The jury is still out on this one, but you disable it by:
sudo gedit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
Set allow-guest=false in [SeatDefaults].
See linuxbsdos.

Ubuntu One

If you don't use Ubuntu One remove it like this:
    killall ubuntuone-login ubuntuone-preferences ubuntuone-syncdaemon
    sudo apt-get purge ubuntuone-client python-ubuntuone-storage*
See ubuntu.com.

Geoclue

You may wish to tell a little less about your location: Use synaptic to uninstall the packages with geoclue in their name.
